Singing Sands
You’ve probably been told at some point in your life to stop dragging your feet. Well, when it comes to nearby Basin Head Beach, we encourage you to do just the opposite – and you will be rewarded with lovely singing. The white sand on this long, pristine beach has higher than usual silica content. When rubbed together, the silica heated by the sun makes a high-pitched squeaking sound which we like to interpret as a song.
Fishing, Lighthouses, Fog Stations and Shipwrecks
Basin Head Fisheries Museum is one of the Island’s seven provincial heritage sites. Overlooking the Northumberland Strait, it houses artifacts, exhibits, displays, dioramas and numerous pieces of relevant equipment. You can learn about small boat building, fishing and fish processing, as told by fishermen of days gone by. Browse the museum gift shop as well as the other businesses on site to pick up souvenirs, clothing or ice cream to enjoy on the beach.
Getting On the Right Track
Elmira Station, just a short drive from here, is the easternmost point of PEI’s railway. Learn how the Island got its railway and check out the 200 models in the train collection. View many items from the M.V. Abegweit, the retired ferry which connected the Island to the mainland, and carried people and goods that were delivered by train.
During July and August, check out the miniature train which is always popular.
